Okay 2013, here we go!:
I started this all without a goal, i wanted to change my life to do what i would think i would like to do most as long as i’m young.
Here i am 4 years later, it’s has been an amazing struggle to keep on standing and to get into 2013 with what i’m doing, music.
In the last 4 years, i’ve been on the edge of giving up sometimes, this because of reasons like health, finances and social life. All of them have been fucked up and some of them are still not that good.
But i’m still standing, and i’m more than happy with it, cause it was a long and lonely road, but it was worth it to keep on fighting till 2013, here’s why:
My very first show of 2013 was also probably one of the hardest (but would change the most for me)I was invited to play on Noorderslag in Holland. Noorderslag is a showcase kinda thing for the “important” people of the business. As soon as an old person i “knew” came up to me, and told me he was one of those “important” people (yes with these words) i wanted to turn around, grab my guitar and drive 3 hours back home. I’m not here to make music for “important” people of the music business (i knew this before, but wasn’t thinking about it that much), i’m here to do what i like to do, for people that like to hear it, and this wasn’t the place where i would feel comfi.
Anyway it was my first reallife meeting with Tom and Jaap from Rock 'n' Roll Highschool (that nowadays are responsible for all the dutch bookings and support) and John Coffey (where i did a bunch of great shows with).
I wasn’t at the right place, and i bet you could see that on stage, but i did what i had to do.
In January and February i started to enter the studio again, as it was about time after 3 years to get a new record, and as there was a big pressure behind it, i had to finish it quick. Too bad all this pressure made me end up in the hospital in between the recording days as my body couldn’t handle all the stress, Somehow i got myself together again and could finish the record on time, luckily this wouldn’t happen anymore (more about this later), a new record was born: If We Go Down, We Will Go Together!
The limited edition vinyl of 100pcs was sold out within 48hours.
The reason why i had to hurry with finishing the record was the upcoming fullband tour that would start in april. This was gonna be the biggest challenge of 2013. 46 days, 42 shows together with 7 other persons that didn’t know eachother (and i knew some of them hardly) in a Van, traveling over 19.000km playing in 9 different countries. Where we’ve played infront of 10 people in Portugal and infront of 1500 on the big festivals. It has been one of the most beautifull tours i’ve done, it was a though one, but definitelly one of the best once. With the highlight of the year included: Groezrock!
During this tour my good friend Claudio and Lorenzo shot the video of Bitter Morning taste, which has got over 25.000 views now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoGtto_EGEo
Massive thanks to: Willem, Joe, Justin, Dave, Verena, Cis, Luke, claudio, Lorenzo and Maike
with only 3 days off in between, i needed to wash my clothes and get my ass back on the road, to go for another run of shows in Switzerland and UK and some Dutch and German Festivals.
As the Fullband earlier in the year was such a great tour, i’ve decided to give it a chance and try to get a band together that won’t tour with me for just one tour a year, but to do more and more shows as a fullband. Next to Joe and Justin (Who already joined the fullband the last 2 years) i found 2 great friends in Sjors (guitar) and Boris (drums).
The first show we played as a band together was also the biggest we’ve done so far with this setting, Lowlands!
Lowlands is a festival in Holland that i’ve been to back in the days, never thought (also groezrock) i would ever play there.
Except for Justin, he couldn’t make it, so the great Gaz Mackie took the plane 2 days before the festival, and saved our asses, Thanks Gaz! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzoW66beHw0
Meanwhile i sat down with Macbeth shoes and Lee clothing to figure out what we can do for eachother! And i’m more than happy to be a part of it and got their support.
After the Fullband tour, Joe decided to do the same as i did a couple of years and to follow his heart and do what he loves to do most and that’s traveling, so he decided to help me out and started to be a great tourmanager and even a better friend. I’ve never sat in a Van that long together with one person, and it’s more than normal to have some arguments, but we never had some! Thanks dude for saving my ass all the time, to listen, to talk and to laugh and complain with me! “Look at us, we’re sitting in a van, doing completely nothing, BULLSHIT!”.
After lowlands, we’ve (me, Justin, Joe and Maike) got an invitation to come over to the south of France, to play a bunch of surfcamp/bar shows! It has probably be the least organized tour we’ve ever done, but great it was. We made a shit load of great friends. Thanks to the whole surfcamp crew, for such a lovely bunch of days! (thanks AXL!)
Ever since than, i’ve been on the road all over Europe.
We also got an invitation for the 8th of October to play at Holland most known Talkshow program: De wereld draait door, this has been the first experience with television for us, and i’m glad we survived and did great, as it was live (1 million viewers). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLttojMycYU
This wouldn’t be our last television experience, as MTV Brandnew put our videoclip of If we go down, we will go together! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_l-_ihWqic (also done by claudio) on television for 4 weeks.
Also the dutch radio station 3fm invited us to some of their radio programs.
In between those things i just had to keep on touring, and the last months has been mostly Holland and Germany, where suddenly thing where changing a bit. Probably for most artist this isn’t special, and probably not a big deal, for me it is, more and more people came to the shows (especially in Germany) and too be honest, the first bunch of shows i hardly knew how to deal with it, but as long as you know that i really appreciate it.
i just played my last show of the year in Essen with probably the loudest sing-a-longs and the biggest turn-up at an headline show, thanks Essen! But offcourse also thanks to all those other venues, promoter, people that helped us, i won’t get more personal as i’m afraid that i will forget to mention some of you. But for a few i want to make an exception:
-Tom van Bergen (for making this year great!)
-Robert Kasel (for the great work in Germany)
-Nico van Montfort (for making the record sounds great)
-Joe Davis (for being the best!)
-John Coffey, Cis, Verena, Harmen, Justin en Lucy (For helping me with the recordings)
-Mainland (for helping me out in Switzerland)
-Cis, Verena, Dave, Willem, luke, Joe, Justin and Maike (for a great fullband tour)
-Sjors, Boris, Joe and Justin (for being great in what you guys are doing)
-my parents, i don’t need to explain this, they are awesome
-Macbeth and Lee (for supporting me)
-Mirko, Uncle M (for helping me so much)
-Claudio and Lorenzo (for the awesome videoclips)
and last but not least
-Maike, for being the best, for supporting me, for saving my ass, for being patient and strong and for letting me doing all of this!
i’m totally ready for 2014, it’s gonna be great!
